Pre-modded MBC3 Cartridge with RTC
This cartridge comes from the same Game Boy hardware rabbit hole as the flash cartridges and Cart Flasher. The idea was to have a practical MBC3-based cartridge with real-time clock support, flash ROM, and FRAM saves.
The RTC part is important because some games and homebrew projects depend on time-based behavior. The FRAM part is there because I prefer avoiding the usual battery-backed SRAM save setup when possible. Fewer batteries to replace, fewer surprises later.
I like this project because it is a mix of restoration, modification, and new hardware. It still has to behave like a normal cartridge on original consoles, but internally it is adapted for a more flexible and serviceable workflow.
It is not the flashiest project visually, but it is very representative of how I approach retro hardware: understand the original system, keep compatibility in mind, and then modify the design just enough to make it more useful today.
